FAQ's

How is our bottle different from other plastic drinks bottles?

NEO WTR is the first drinks brand in Europe to use 100% Prevented Ocean Plastic™ *. The bottles we recycle to make our bottles are collected from at-risk coastlines in a true bottle-to-bottle, circular solution that supports ocean protection in the process. We believe the most effective way to tackle marine plastic is to prevent it from reaching the ocean in the first place. By sourcing plastic bottles for recycling that are Ocean-Bound, we are preventing them from making it to the ocean, where recovering them would be a cleanup effort, rather than a recycling effort. This is because the sun and salt degrade the plastic, making it much harder to recycle.

*Excludes Cap & Label.

What is the recycled content of our bottle?

Our bottle uses 100% recycled Prevented Ocean Plastic™ which is a type of ocean-bound plastic that has been recovered from at-risk coastlines.

What is Prevented Ocean Plastic™ Material?

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is high quality, certified recycled plastic that has been collected from coastal areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution. The Program offers an ongoing supply of this traceable material while supporting local communities in the regions where the material is sourced from and driving long-term environmental solutions.

Why did NEO WTR choose Prevented Ocean Plastic™?

NEO WTR wanted to address the plastic pollution issue that comes from its industry – bottled drinks. Many of the big drinks companies simply aren’t doing enough to address the waste their products create – with the top 3 plastic polluters in the world being large soft drinks corporations*. We wanted to provide a solution that makes consumers feel good about the product they are choosing. The Prevented Ocean Plastic™ program is an innovative program that is leading the way in its recycling efforts. By choosing this material we are playing an active role in removing ocean-bound plastic from at-risk regions, preventing it from going into the ocean, and stopping virgin (new) plastic being made, as we are using waste plastic that already exists and giving it new purpose.

How many bottles does each bottle of NEO WTR prevent from going into the ocean?

Each 500ml bottle of NEO WTR prevents 1.7 bottles from reaching the ocean. We have chosen to use a heavier bottle than the industry standard so we can remove even more ocean-bound bottles from the coastline.

What are the benefits of this type of recycled material and how does it make an impact?

There are many environmental and social benefits of using the recycled material from this Program.

The Program invests in recycling infrastructure, in these vulnerable areas where needed – developing trust through improved standards, genuine traceability and a credible, research-based approach.

Giving value back to the ocean-bound bottle: The waste plastic would end up in the ocean if this method of prevention did not occur. By collecting the discarded plastic from along the coastline and recycling it so it can be made into other things – in our case, our NEO WTR bottles.

The collectors in these locations often have limited opportunities available to earn a wage. Each collector is paid for the material they collect, with over $100,000 dollars being sent to collectors each day. This helps them build a better life. The program supports equality and equity

Where is the waste plastic collected from?

NEO WTR bottles are made from plastic collected in Indonesia. Indonesia is the third greatest ocean plastic polluter*. Indonesia doesn’t have formalised waste management or recycling facilities in place and does not have safe drinking water from the tap, so locals rely on bottled water to survive. Indonesia is made up of 17,000 islands, so the proximity of the ocean-bound plastic to the ocean is a real issue.

How does this type of recycling work?

Discarded plastic bottles are picked up from areas at risk of ocean plastic pollution by local first collectors and taken to nearby collection centres, where they receive fair payment for their labour.

Upon arrival, these plastic bottles are carefully sorted by hand to have the caps and labels removed. They are then pressed into bales to make them ready for transport to a plastic recycling factory.

At a factory, the plastic goes through enhanced quality checks, including further hand and machine sortation. Then it is washed, sanitised and processed into raw material flakes. Every step is carried out according to European and North American quality standards.

Our recycled plastic has certified traceability from coastline collection and throughout the recycling process until it becomes our sustainable recycled NEO WTR bottles on shelf.

Is this material safe for food contact?

It meets regulatory health and safety standards, is traceable back to source and can be identified on-pack through the triangular logo.

Is the bottle fully recyclable – including label and cap?

Can they be recycled in kerbside collection?
